because he doesn't really give a shit. he's fat, offensive, not really all that smart, and despite that, he's incredibly successful. not to mention he'll constantly do things like punching producers and talking shit about muslim politicians and still be just as successful regardless

Probably not, but he doesn't take it apart he reassembles it, hence the title, which probably takes a lot more intelligence. He also chats about the history of engineering and design while doing it, you can tell he knows his stuff and isn't purely reciting a script. It's kino and I would highly recommend it.

James isn't dumb, and I also don't think he's supposed to be the brains of the group, he's mostly just more calm and introspective, whereas Hammond and Clarkson are more impulsive and in-the-moment. I suppose that can in-effect make him the more rational one, but it's arguable that's more of a personality trait and less about the inherent wisdom/dullness of any members of the group.
