Maybe, but Garland said when writing it it came out like a novel, with each chapter ending up as an episode. But yeah, if Ex Machina was a movie, Devs could have been one too.

I agree. I read an interview where Garland talked about how people accuse him of making movies about topics you'd talk about while stoned in college. His counter-argument was that these topics (AI, predetermination, etc.) aren't ever concluded, that you just stop talking about them. The problem with Devs was that he did the same thing (ironically). After 7 and a half episodes it stops being about predetermination and takes a sharp turn into simulated realities and parallel worlds. OKAY. But then what was the point of the story really? Good production, but wish he was willing to make some kind of big statement at the end rather than basically just shrugging.
