E.T.'s a good family movie and Star Wars was big at the time so that people wanted more feel good alien/adventure movies for kids. Blade Runner was a dark dystopian future that no one wanted in the early 80s and the forced narration by the studio ruined the theatrical cut which critics probably hated. That goes for the original. Blade Runner 2049 flopped because people only watch capeshit now and cyberpunk isn't big as it was when Matrix came out.

The way I describe this movie to friends is like if it swung for the fences, missed and snapped its spine in half. A messy result you wouldn't consider "good" but you sort of respect the weird ambition of it all.
