Judging from the third one, that it's going to be bad.
Evangelion has a fuckton of problems. Even if 3 were decent, you'd still get a crap finale or a mediocre one at best because the people who own Evangelion are otaku obsessed with their own favorite character.
The whole premise of the Rebuilds is based on Anno taking out his anger on the audience for having chosen Rei back in the 90's over his own favorite, Asuka.
That's why you've got Shinji "saving Rei" but not Asuka, and the whole world being "ruined" because of that, as Shinji has to be punished for his sin. Not even joking that's actual dialogue.

See that sums it up. The first two had some questionable elements (introducing Kaworu, moefying Asuka), but the third movie is the first movie where all inhibitions are lost and there's no brakes on the pandering-train any more.
The whole movie reads like a fanfic out of deviantart where Anno just.... and I mean it just unironically makes his waifu Asuka never age, gives her super strength and Angel powers. I mean just.... WHAT?

It's not even true. That's what Rebuild fans said to excuse it. They had a billion excuses, like "they had to change it because of the earthquake", or "it only seems bad because it's actually a two-parter and the new one will be out in a few months".
They've spread hundreds of theories about why 3.0 sucks that normalize it sucking.

how do you explain then the preview of 3? bait and switch? could make sense if, as I said, the whole 3rd movie contradicts the end of 2. it feels like they skipped a whole movie between 2 and 3

3 isn't excellent technically either. Don't mistake budget for technical excellence. Technically, it's worse than early 2000's 3DCG movies, and Khara is a terrible animation company. The only thing that makes it seem good is the soundtrack.

See That's how it's explained. It is a setup.
Anno hates Rei, but loves Asuka. Why? He created Asuka modeled on his own favorite characters in fiction. Rei being more popular makes his autism go wild.
So Anno makes new EVA, and:
>Has Asuka become stronger, more competent
>Has Shinji invest emotionally in Rei, saving her and not Asuka
>Has the entire world be ruined, placing the entire blame on Shinji for having saved Rei specifically
>Rei is demolished as a character
>Shinji is further kicked around
and that's the whole explanation. There is no "inbetween" 3.0 and 2.0 because there can't be, it's simply Anno taking out his frustrations on the audience through Shinji.
Rebuild isn't logical, rightehous or sane much like Anno isn't any of those things when he got mad about Rei being more popular.
Everything else is just windowdressing and pandering.

also, you aren't totally wrong, but comparing rebuild to one of the best animated movies ever doesn't make much sense imo, there are other things to consider other than the animation per se. most 2D game looks like ass if you compare them to metal slug, not necessarily because they suck, but because MS set an incredibly high bar

Look, Rebuild mirrors the mindset of Asuka and Kaworu fans in particular. Which is why those are the only two types of people who end up liking it a lot, while the rest almost always hate it.
When NGE finished, certain fans hated on Shinji for his close relationship with Rei. When 2.0 finished, those two groups were SEETHING that Shinji did all that for Rei. In fact, before 3.0 was a thing, those fans on Evageeks and 2ch were going on long tirades about how Shinji should be punished for "ruining everything".
Rebuild 3.0 takes those emotions, either intentionally or not, and places them into film. It is, intentionally or not, a pure reflection of how messed up Asuka and Kaworu fans are. They want Shinji both for themselves, they want Rei dead and dollified, and Shinji to be punished for the "Sin" of having a close budding relationship with Rei.
That's why the reaction in 3 makes no sense, in such a wild manner that you can't even justify it retroactively without massive retons that make the story even worse. It's because it's built upon a fundamentally, warped and childish notion, that you shouldn't like Rei but like other characters instead.
The plot, the story are all as jumbled as it is because of that.

As Rebuild demonstrated, there is no story any more. Just waifufagging. You're not the only one who went into the Rebuilds thinking it would be a serious affair.

Yeah, Asuka is a good character, just not in the Rebuilds. In the Rebuilds, Asuka is Anno's wet dream that's only there to be "popular" and heal the wound from the old days of NGE.
Japan also prefers Asuka now, since they turned Rei into an actual doll. All they achieved was debunking the whole thing you said in the end.

sorry guys, but I won't believe that anno jeopardized the whole production just to spite some weebs, not unless he openly said so. evangelion is nearly as old as I am and this waifushit has been going on for over two decades and through countless spin-offs, I doubt anno really gives a fuck now, if he ever did. your point doesn't have any more substance that what I read 10 years ago about the rewritings, unless there's some concrete evidence to it

If I may say so, at this point, if you were given even absolute proof, like a secret recording of Anno and Tsurumaki admitting to everything, you'd still find another excuse to remain "loyal".
At this point, res ipsa loquitur. The facts speaks for themselves. The very fact that Anno has:
