In any sensible story, Gaston is the protagonist with a recognized character flaw of vanity, but in this story, Belle is the protagonist and her character flaw of vanity goes completely unspoken and unacknowledged. Instead of going with the man who is a productive member of society and curbing his arrogant tendencies, she goes with the man who is rich and royal despite his abusive behaviour, because through the power of her female beauty and charm she can change him into her perfect prince.

This is the story that we show to little girls.

Gaston is only a big fish in a small pond, the Beast is a literal noblemen, basically peak of society.
