This movie is made for Jews. If you're not Jewish then you'll never truly get it, even if you think you did.
I'm 7% jewish and I don't get it
Accept the mystery
Still entertaining
I just saw this on Netflix, do Jews really refer to others as goys in casual conversation? I thought that was just a meme, that's kinda fucked
It's a bullshit copout premise that the Cohens love.
>haha anyone could tell a story with a problem and a resolution
>but what if we never have a resolution, and just leave the main character asking the question?
>just accept the mystery bro. Truly revolutionary filmmaking
It's the equivalent of that banana taped to the wall sold for like $200k
Well Judaism is the Mystery Cult of Yahweh after all
I liked it OK I guess, but it being a Super Coen Bros. movie I honestly thought I would get more out of it. I don't get what made it acclaimed.
>>It's the equivalent of that banana taped to the wall sold for like $200k
The user was right, you do have to be Jewish to understand.
...
>bad things happen to me
>why do they keep happening to me?
>i'm not meant to know why and just bear with it
I don't know, I'm probably missing a bunch of meaning because I've never bothered with the Talmud or any mysticism or folk tales. The movie is sort of comparable to Pi in a way. Trying to find meaning where it seems there is none, only to be turned away and punished for trying.
The movie takes place in the 60's, so these would have been 2nd or 3rd gen Jews most likely so I'm gonna say yes. It's not so common now, except in yiddish expressions by older generations, like "goyisher kop" (gentile-head ie, idiot)
By the way, what was the connection of the intro scene with the old man that comes in for soup to the main story?
I thought it was a nice introduction both for the tone of the film and the theme of not knowing whether things are supernatural or not.
It's about a clash of human with God and human and destiny in judaism.
what is there to get? it's just misery porn, with a nihilistic "what's the fucking point of this anyway" backdrop.
it gets 2 out of 5 stars from me on letterboxd. eat my ass vapors, coen brothers.
I found it pretty straightforward. You know when X happens, and you ascribe it to Y because of Z reason ? For example, your life hit a bumpy patch, you prayed to God and things improved, then got bad again. Do you wonder if God's testing you, or do you say "it was all just a coincidence" and move on ? Did things improve after that, making you feel as if "betraying God" improved your life, and have thereupon been benefitted by Satan ? Did things never improve in the first place, after praying, which made you condemn God, which in turn create doubts of whether it wa sa test from God to see if you could weather the storm ? It goes on and on, in various patterns and there's no escape. It's the maddening spiral that you can fall into when you question reality and struggle with your beliefs.
It's the film equivalent of that. The protagonist is both a Jew and a scientist. He tries to explain the world rationaly, and as his life unravels he tries to find a meaning. Is it a test by God ? Is it all just random ? Did he condemn himself by taking the tribe, or was it just a random occurence ? It's what the prologue is for. Is the old man an evil spirit and they're already cursed, did they get cursed by stabbing him, believing him to be a spirit, or was he just an old man and they've commited murder, which now means they're damned if God is real, or they just have to live with it if God doesn't exist ? The same way, is the protagonist damned ? Is it all bollocks ? Is he being tested ? What happened to the goy's teeth ? The truth is that he'll never know for sure, and it will all repeat, time and time again.
It's man's struggle with God and metaphysics in a world modern enough to have answers, but not advanced enough to explain the deep questions inside of us.
I honestly think it's their best film
It's about something that I think everyone can connect to- the desire to explain the disparate, disconnected events in your life in order to find some kind of path or direction or commonality. But it's a fruitless endeavor obviously
its Barton Fink I don't get.
Life is long and hard ~ The Jew
>on letterboxed
Why do people do this?
to get (You)s
It's a very loose adaptation of Dante's Inferno
the cohens themselves said there's no connection
they literally left it to suckup critics to interpret it for them. such is the power of the jew.
It's a treatment on the Jewish conception of God: he punishes, but doesn't reward
accept that it's kino
Thats because Jews seem incapable of learning from their mistakes. It's 99% of their holybook is them fucking up, trying to redeem themselves and being forgiven. then fucking up even worse than the last time. Rinse and repeat until the Romans wipe them out.
I'LL SHOW YOU THE LIFE OF THE MIND
That movie was pure kino. Don't think about it because too much because you aren''t in control of anything.
but there is a resolution
he cracks and god punishes him
