same reason alice in wonderland exists, and wendy in peter pan. young girls are seen as "innocent" and make a good protagonist to see through the eyes of a new world with. young boys almost always have to have an adventure/conquering/explorer motif whereas young girls can kinda just exist in the world and the audience accepts it. It also helps because audiences are conditioned not to think young girls are in danger so the Ghibli settings become comfortble. He also subverts all this with warrior princess characters like Nausicaa and Mononoke.

The sad thing is that the majority of men are like this. Women think ALL men are incapable of liking women because the only men they actually regard are dark triad men with handsome traits.
