watch The Big Sleep now

Got it

The first viewing of this is always lukewarm, going into this on repeat viewings is when it gets super comfy and the entire point of the movie is in the style and the performances than the story which is why it holds up. The story is always going to be the same thing every time, the style and performances, especially Gould’s Marlowe, really has its own unique feeling and personality that other noirs of this era and before it never had. This is one of those films that works best as a midnight movie in the comfort of your own home.

Is this a comfy noir thread?

It’s not really that it’s “better” so much as it was one of the first. There wouldn’t be other la noirs about loser detectives if not for this film. Spike from Cowboy Bebop wouldn’t even exist if not for this film.

I kind of want to re-clarify. People watching it for the first time always pay most attention to plot when in the long goodbye plot is literally an afterthought, the entire dynamism and fluidity of the film from the editing to the sound design are where it really shines, Gould’s Marlowe performance is really the heart of the film.

Sure just saw the lady from Shanghai too thought it was good though it's the first 1940s noir film I've ever seen got any suggestions?

cringe

I was thinking of spike while watching this film but I thought spike was based on a Japanese actor

I did enjoy him alot I was laughing when I found out he was that cranky Jewish guy in oceans 11 a night and day difference

Shanghai is good but Touch of Evil is much much better

>ross and monica's dad from friends was once this cool and talented
How did he fuck it up?

I refuse to believe that shit about that Japanese actor being Spike's inspiration. Maybe in part, but Spike IS Marlowe in this film

ENHANCE

I believe it too, the only reason Ein was a dog and not a cat is that it would be plagiarism.

it's 1/3 that japanese guy, 1/3 marlowe 1/3 Lupin III
CB is a mix, so are the characters.

This is unironically the best movie Arnie ever appeared in.

Holy fuck.
You're right, it really is him.

>no big combo

The big combo is no. 28 in my greatest noir of all time. The film is worth watching by its photography alone

It’s okay with me

It gets kinda boring when he spends too much time at that artfags house.

Ok buddy youre in the clear and I see you have The Killing on there too, your alibi checks out.

*for* sorry

Nigga Sterling Hayden is one of the best parts about that whole movie, he isn’t even an artfag he is the man Marlowe isn’t, tall, brooding, masculine, and has a hot wife, whereas Marlowe is calm, fluid, and lives with a cat. They contrast each other but Hayden is still his own character with a lot of agency as an actor. This is a film that’s all haracter and performance.

Marlowe > Roger Wade > Marty Augustine > Augustines autistic henchmen > the balcony thots > Lennox > the cat > Arnie > Conchetta > the cole bottle girl
