I think this sort of contrived, completely situational hyper-competence of the bad guys in this show sets a great example of what the term "cartoon villain" should really mean as a criticism, rather than it being a complaint about the characters being too explicitly and one-dimensionally evil.

the army of the dead ultimately played no role at all. i was expecting (maybe foolishly) that at least three important characters would be instantly incinerated by the dead dragon as a way of announcing its presence. unfortunately the only deaths in that fight were so drawn out that eventually they didn't even feel like deaths at all, but rather like the kind of send-offs that characters get when the actor is quitting the show. it's a shame that the army of the dead did not actually affect the outcome of the war in any serious way.
