First installment is an OVA style remake (it actually looks great even if saying that upsets some autists), after that it goes way off-beam. Its true to Anno not caring what he does to his audience perhaps. Not really a remake because its also clear the events the series have happened before somehow even if we start at the same point.

Repetition and return was a theme of the original series though, if one of the least talked about.
