It's kind of funny that HBO offered them at least 20 episodes for seasons 7 and 8 and GRRM went out and publicly said they should have 30-40 more, but D&D decided to just do 16 episodes combined for the final two seasons because they were so far up their own asses and desperately chasing that rumored Star Wars job/HBO alt-history drama. Then because they rushed things, they ended up fucking up so badly that they lost the gigs that they ruined GOT to get in the first place.

I really don't understand how they could have developed this sense of creative arrogance/infallibility. The elements of GOT that made it so popular were solid adaptations of the books. Keeping the best conversations, events, and the overall story, without getting lost in GRRM's bizarre fixation on 14-year old girls and food descriptions. That was seasons 1-4, and those were some of the best seasons of any tv show in the past decade. Where along the line did D&D get the idea that they were somehow themselves the creative geniuses? Why did nobody stop them?

GOT's decline was by the far the most brutal in history, except for maybe The Simpsons. Worse than Dexter, worse than Homeland. It went from a legit GOAT contender in its first 4 season to literal trash in its last 4. Sad.

There is no last good season, the whole thing is shit. It was plain from the start they had no idea what they were doing, just phoning in a totally surface level adaption that became increasingly unhinged from the themes they were supposed to be adapting.

GOT has roughly 8 years of popularity versus 40 years of Star Wars. And it was in the brief time that Disney owned Star Wars that the IP was utterly destroyed.
