Wow it's almost like you entirely missed the point of the movie. Tom Hanks character from the get go was a mysterious captain to his troops. He hid his backstory. His job before the war. If he had any wife or kids. It was a recurring plot point in the movie that his soldiers would make bets on what he did. But why did he do this?
Because Saving Private Ryan isnt about saving private Ryan. It's all about Tom Hanks journey into trust and finally in the end, friendship.
It is only after losing most of his squad and being overrun by Germans does he finally realize just what trust and friendship entail. And as he sits there at the end, all shot up and bleeding out, he remembers his squad. His friends. Their hopes and dreams and violent deaths. When he raises his pistol at the tank it's with the thought of friendship and trust in his mind. Then he pulls the trigger and the tank explodes.
