The British bad teeth thing is a post-WWII development. Basically the government of the time decided returning soldiers and their families should get free health care from the state they fought to defend then they realised this would include basically everyone so made it universal. The one bit they didn't make free was dental care (probably because people didn't eat much sugar then) so it became part of the public pysche that dental care was nonessential.

you dont understand, if you have any issues at all you go to your doctor who then prescribes dental treatment on the NHS and then you wait (a while) for your free dental care.
if you go straight to a dentist then they will charge you but if your GP says is a medical need youll get it for free unless you are a high earner.
