Celebrity 'culture' directed towards the aristocracy has grown and waned for centuries. The current trend of having them becoming increasingly public figures actually began with Princess Diana who became a massive public icon. Before she really set the trend they were very much a 'mysterious' and extremely private group. Sure there were scandals now and again but they never played the modern celebrity role as much as they do today.
