make it not suck this time

I wouldn’t, it’s a show that really worked best for a specific time period and sensibility. Some things should be left in peace as they are.

I'd make him a hip, streetwise black woman with unshaven armpits.

With Tessa Thompson asColumbo.

Fuck you

There's no dude alive now with a gruff but gentle voice and quirky demeanor that can pull off a reboot.

I can see a similar style show with Mark Ruffalo but it can't be Colombo.

People who reboot old media own the rights and are looking for a quick buck. Since you don't own the rights you shouldn't want them to reboot Columbo.

I would spend as little as possible on the show and embezzle as much as I can.

You have to, robots make you do it

make it a parody with Charlie Day

it would have to be diverse

Since this thread has likely already gone to shit; I'm interested in watching Columbo because it's take on the eccentric detective trope is cool, but I've heard there's a lot of material and it's very episodic. So what would be a good place to start? Seasons, episodes?

Norm McDonald

Mark Ruffalo as Columbo.
HBO show with a big hollywood actor as the guest killer.
Show stays in the 70s and keeps the aesthetics

And one more thing.

I’d make him a cute girl. He (now she) could still reference his wife, but she has to be a cute girl too

Haha thatd be great

I would step in a time machine and bring a young Peter Falk to 2020.

You can’t reboot or recast Columbo, just like you can’t (successfully) with “Magnum PI”

LITERALLY episode 1 directed by Steven Spielberg.
It's highly episodic to the point you can literally watch in any order. I'd recommend watching in chronological order so you can grow with the show. But you can always look up a top 15 most epic Columbo episodes and give those a go.
The original run is perfect except for Last Salute to Commodore.
Every episode is basically the same but they have such a perfect formula and main actor you don't even care.

Reboot seasons (89 - 2003) are meh but there's some standout stuff

It’s all villain of the week, no major storylines that take entire seasons to resolve.
Consult a Colombo fansite for suggestions and don’t worry about spoilers because the bad guy’s revealed at the beginning of each episode

Ruffalo needs to start smoking tons of cigars to get the right voice.

It would be set in the 70s

Just watch Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes.

This, kinda. Just don't look spoilers that spoil how Columbo catches the killer (it's the whole fun of this format), and please don't look up anything about Forgotten Lady (S5E1)

Fuck you

So I'd start with a completely original concept add some completely original characters with original names and I'd title it something completely original. Oh, and I wouldn't let anyone who got their job through nepotism or a diversity quota anywhere near it.

even when they do things mostly the same way, it's still soulless

I cast Steve Carrell as Columbo and use other Office cast members wherever possible

guaranteed massive hit

Monk?

happiness is columbo without peter falk

I'm surprised it hasn't been rebooted. Columbo is essentially about a working-class schmuck outwitting rich people who are too quick to dismiss anyone that's not classy.
I can already see the soft-reboot (even though Columbo has no continuity) about his young spunky granddaughter that solves cases just like her legendary grandpa used to.
I can see it all so clearly, even the episode where they bring back Shatner to play the killer for the third time and the clip where they explain why there's 3 guys with the same face gets a stunning 200 thousand views on youtube.

ryan gosling and make him have a cocaine problem and banging a new hot big titted roastie every episode

I'd make him black and wait for my Emmy.

Doesn’t sound like Columbo, but it does sound based.

no way, columbo needs to be played by some greasy wop

Idris Elba

>the killer underestimates her not because she looks like a hobo (she doesn't) but because she's female

we already Luther

and mixed race. her mother is played by Tessa Thompson.

I don't think you can re-cast Columbo. As lame as it can be, I would go with one of his grandkids grown up. Maybe put them in a different kind of investigative profession that lets you tell it differently. Maybe they can be an animal abuse PI to really tug on people's heartstrings. Like an animal lover's Law and Order SVU.

Thank you for your answer, user. Had no idea about the first episode.
