Deep Space Nine

This show is so good. The casting and the acting are phenomenal, and the corresponding writing seems to create a world where the interests and consequences of individual characters meshes well with the show's galactic scale. Everything fits together so well, it makes the fictional universe seem alive and huge and vibrant and dynamic.

It's like a really well executed combination of having both high production values as well as what you could call soul. It's also comfy as fuck for a show that opens indicating in a number of ways that it's going to be the opposite, with familiar Picard and the Enterprise abandoning the viewer on a shitty run-down dark dingy alien space station in disrepair, whose commander just had an unpleasant argumentative encounter with Picard who is then never seen again
It opens to the sense that things are going to not be very fun but by the end of the dominion war it has such a legacy of enjoyable characters and arcs and memes and plotlines.

Yeah its probably one of the best written tv shows out there.
Even if you're not into star trek, just watching the character develop, and all the different plot arks intertwine is a work of magic.

Just started watching after finishing TNG and could not agree more. Its a relief just to have a less formal setting. Everything's great but I would happily have a show of just Odo and Quark talking for 45 minutes.

Luckily there's a few episodes of just that. I love the one where Odo breaks his leg and they're stranded on an alien planet together...

Its my favorite star trek. Very good show.

kill bajoran scum

DS9 was good but it ruined trek. I watched it once and will never watch it again.

love my nigga garak hes the best i got the book

Gas all Bajorans

Odo episodes are nightmare fuel. They have that foreboding 70s feel everytime it is his character episode. Dukat elevates the whole show. Dukat Space Nine.

I know DS9 is well regarded, but when Voyager arrived I gladly left the space station for a more familiar environment

i had a toy of the station when I was younger and I kept stepping on it accidentally, as a result I haven't seen it

i've been watching it for the first time and the acting for bashir is bothering me in the later seasons

True that brother. The same is true for Babylon 5. If you haven't seen it, check it out. Both shows are often compared, but they're entirely different animals. Both have great stories and characterizations though!

I was thinking recently, are there any tv series besides TNG, DS9 and B5 that fulfill the following
1. major, recurring alien species (not just forehead prosthetics of the week)
2. we see homeworlds or at least ships with aliens interacting in their own habitat (one main cast member isn't the only representative we ever see)
3. different species are actual players on the galactic stage (they don't exist in a vacuum and seemingly live nowhere and have no effect on the setting at large)
4. it's actually aliens and not transparently different flavors of homo sapiens (the stargate clause)

I honestly can't think of any but the big three and it's a major downer since it would be my favorite genre of space opera.

Star Trek: space mall manager was barely Better than voyager

How did odo break his leg if he’s made of goo

That's fine, I myself don't really judge or see it primarily by its position or context in Star Trek, more on its own quality as a show. Which as I said, I think is very high

It's because competition breeds quality, the entire show was slapped together to prevent Babylon 5 from accumulating the trekkie fanbase.

I personally think Babylon 5 is better and more impressive, it did more with a shoestring budget and had more intricate arcs and politics, not to mention costumes and makeup. DS9 won in the ship effects department, and that's about it.

Decent opinion. DS9 just wasn't what I wanted.

He gets turned into a human for a while

Farscape fufills most of what you're looking for.

1.A fair few major reoccurring species
2. At least one home world was shown that wasn't Earth of the main aliens. Maybe two. Not major parts of the series.
3. Different species do affect the galaxy. Especially later on but early on you see how one main character has affected some planets.
4. It has a lot of different looking species in it.
