Yeah that's not a hipster bike. It has both front and rear brakes, and is multi-speed. That's a cx/gg bike with road tyres put in (fork is too wide for it to be a straight road bike). Hipsters like to ride a fixie without brakes because they think it's fun to be a danger for everyone else. They also spend $1k on a fixie despite one of the major arguments for riding fixie is the cheap cost due to lack of parts.
Agreed that All-City bikes are a bit pricey, but their bikes are also all-steel which is rare these days, and the parts are high quality. Steel is gonna last forever and is durable, very good for commuting where you might have to sometimes ride on gravel.
I can find similar bikes with similar parts but an aluminium frame&fork that are $500 cheaper, but if I want a full carbon fiber bike (not just fork, alum. frame and carbon fiber forks are common for ~$2k price point) with good parts, I'm going to have to fork out at least $2.5k. Also who the fuck rides a carbon fiber bike for commuting or comfy evening rides? That shit is strictly for road cycling where you dress up in a condom suit for maximum speed so you can impress your work mates with your strava results.

The new hotness is microsuspensions built into the frame that give you about 25mm of play. Like the willier triestina or the Specialized Diverge. In about 10 years microsuspensions will be on most road bikes.
Prople still ride front suspension hardtails all the time still. Because they arent the fad you can get one for 500 to 1k that rocks. Handlebars on mtbs are also wider and have a slight rise on them to make things more comfy.
