The type of Christianity that gained popularity in the U.S. was extreme compared to others, with ideas like "viewing the body naked is a sin", and "masturbating is sinful", and taking a literal interpretation of the Bible instead of the more formal approach where much of it is metaphor. Also, Christianity in the U.S. is very aggressive at attempting to hook in new members, rather than simply existing peacefully for those who desire it like elsewhere. In a lot of ways, this hypocritical form of Christianity is essential to what American culture was until very recently. Disaffected millenials were right in taking the piss out of it, but the problem is nothing has come to replace it. Being an American meant being Christian for the longest time, and now that people are disconnected from their ancestors like that, it takes a readjustment of values and finding something new in life to care about, which takes time.
