It was the right advice for his time, when totalitarian ideologies seemed new and untried. He was appealing to people to remember common decency and not be swayed by arguments that the perfect state could come by persecuting the rich, purifying society, colonizing Ethiopia or whatever. Unfortunately the peddling of totalitarian ideologies and the police state has become more insidious in our day and learned to play on peoples' feelings of altruism, empathy for underdogs, appeals to fairness etc., as befits a populace that's grown stupider and less literate with the spread of TV and then social media.
