Reminder that the only innovative thing about Citizen Kane is that it was the first time a Hollywood studio gave the director complete creative control. All the other innovations people attach to it (deep focus, nonlinear storytelling, showing the ceilings, old age makeup, etc.) had all been done before. This, of course, says nothing about the film's quality or influence
