It was good, but it wasn't THAT good. More noir/neo-noir?

Well, if you like more detective stuff Farewell, My Lovely is a good one. If you're in the mood for more erotic noir Body Heat and After Dark My Sweet

Criterion Channel has a stellar lineup of Columbia noir rn.

Noir as a genre isn't that good. Literally better off watching the Max Payne movie than some old fedora flick

t. retard
Noir isn't even a fucking genre

Noir is great.
Explain to me how noir isn't a genre?

LA Confidential

I was a little disappointed as well with all the hype around it but pic related was exactly what I was looking for

Knives Out

>it wasn't THAT good
unironically kill yourself

Watch it again later. Chinatown is one of those perfectly structured films that you get more out of with repeated watchings.

>Noir as a genre isn't that good.
Get a load of this guy telling me what genres I should be enjoying.

it's definitely the best film of all time. It has artistic merit but is in no way pretentious. Has a thrilling and clever plot but isn't over complicated. Every line scene and action means something and there are no plot holes or lose ends. Its the perfectly balanced film. Sadly i have never met a femoid who can sit through it. Make me lose faith

If you read then read The Big Nowhere, L.A. Confidential, and White Jazz. One of the rare cases where the book and the film are totally different but they are both good. technically you should read the Black Dahlia soon but it doesn't fit in with the other 3 books that well so i wouldn't bother

start with The Big Sleep to calibrate your senses

Thanks user I'll check them out

get ready for a ride. hope you like Ellroys writing style it's very one of kind

It's not genre. Any genre from can be considered as Noir. It's more of an art movement than a genre

Love both TBN and LA Confidential. I skipped The Black Dahlia because the movie was disappointing.

the books are very different to the films but Black Dahlia doesn't link in with the rest very much anyway. Read White Jazz or you're missing the conclusion

If you haven’t seen pickup on south street ,a face in the crowd, the setup, night and the city and try and get me; then you should definitely watch them as they are highest caliber of kino noir films

The long goodbye is my fav

Cutter’s Way was pretty good. Very funny but a downer ending.

U-Turn was pretty good neo noir

I'm busy reading Lew Archer series by Ross MacDonald, White Jazz can wait lol.

>reading
please leave

??

Elliot Gould is based in this 70s take on a Raymond Chandler book

Chinatown is best understood as a genius example of screenwriting than it is a great film. There's a lot in that film that is easy to miss.

The big Lebowski is modern day nior.

but its an absolutely perfect film though

OP here. No, I think it was pretty great, probably just the hype build up from years hearing about the film and not seeing it made me think it wasn't as good as I'd thought it to be. Storywise, it wasn't as compelling as I'd hoped, but the atmosphere was perfect. Like the user said, perfectly balanced, perhaps too balanced. Definitely will watch it again.

>The big Lebowski
I've tried watching that film three times and never once finished it, seems like the type of shit only Americans can appreciate.

I love this one.

Yeah well you know that's just like your opinion man.

Alright boys, The Long Goodbye will be what I watch next, you've talked me into it

It's not a genre of film. A drama can be noir, etc. It's a film aesthetic. A way to deliver a story.
