The funny thing is you thought people would understand wtf you're talking about
It's ruined horror. The slow burns of yesteryear still had a sense of dread and atmosphere even during the slow scenes. The new shit is completely flat when the horror isn't happening and then the horror just awkwardly comes back. I get that it's supposed to be a jarring juxtaposition but it's just tedious nothing with half assed genre shit. Plus theres much more emphasis on lifetime original drama levels of non horror shit thrown in far out weighing the horror elements. Also the social elements were in horror back in the day but in a tasteful subtextual way rather than being at the forefront/point of the film and finally i'd argue that racism and sexism WERE issues 30 plus years ago, where as now its just propaganda meant for social engineering.
but Yas Forums said The Lighthouse was great?
the horror genre had become fucking garbage before they took over
all anyone did was ride the coattails of paranormal activity. utter shit
>with relevant modern social commentary
We needed LESS of this bullshit, not fucking MORE. It's permeated fucking everything to the point the rare shit that DOESN"T have any of it at all still gets slammed & argued over from that perspective.
I'll ride your mom
>all anyone did was ride the coattails of paranormal activity
Which in itself was a coattail riding of Blair Witch.
All it ever does is detract from shit, making it incredibly dated.
are there any Yas Forums horror charts? I feel like the genre doesn't have a lot to offer outside of the obvious classics like Alien, The Shining, etc
I couldn't tell you because I'm not retarded enough to watch horror and certainly not modern horror.
Horror is dead and faggots like you are partially responsible. Fuck off.
Do people really still say hipsters?
Imagine in 2050, you're watching a kino with your 10 years old tranny slave gf and suddenly some character starts rambling about gay rights
god that's embarrassing
t. soimale
Actually BWP had surprisingly few imitators back when it was current. Paranormal Activity kicked off a found footage craze that lasted through most of the 2010s.
>gets censored from the tv broadcasts like "fuck"
Because the "imitation" shit has only picked up steam & accelerated. Just like the franchise rebooting. Those used to happen once a decade at most, now a series might get rebooted 3 times within a decade.
Modern horror is the best it has been for over fifteen years user. The 90's had some good stuff but the 2000's had a horror drought, all that was available was shitty shaky-cam that was ripping off The Blaire Witch Project and crappy big budget remakes of 70's and 80's slasher movies. Sure we get some crap like The Invisible Man, but we are in a horror revival period, there is a lot of good stuff available.
I always think about the creator of this chart when I see it. He must be a very based individual.
i’ve only seen the witch and hereditary and the witch was definitely much better so maybe you’re right.
True, there’s already a PA reboot in the works.
Hereditary is the only one that's actually scary.
Horror has pretty much always been shit. It's only good when it's just a guise for funding to make arthouse.
The Blair Witch reboot was awful and they almost immediately dropped the found footage premise. No attempt was made at all to explain how we the audience were seeing their footage.
like button status: smashed
And riding the coattails of Halloween which plagued horror for damn near 25 years
Nu horror is extremely formulaic
>DUDE NO JUMPSCARES AND DEEP SLOWBURN ABOUT MENTAL ILLNESS
I didn't because no horror movie is a good movie.
who /autopsyofjanedoe/ here?
>relevant modern social commentary
Yaaaaaaaaaaaawn.
Its not even the spine tingling slow burning bone chillers, it'a that they have no fucking balls at all for horror, it's always just metaphor or allegory, and even the most paper-thin story gets marketted to death so long as it has A24 aesthetic.
Hereditary at least had the balls to go full supernatural, every other modern horror 'masterpiece' has been utter trash.
Fucking Midsommar epitomises everything wrong with modern horror. It's not even half-baked, it's a total mess and feels like a film that was abandoned at the end of act 2 and they just let interns finish it. Never been so bored and underwhelmed in all my life.
you're just mad it's not a social commentary you agree with. Go back to your board. Why can't movies be social commentaries?
I'm not gonna lie I fucking hated Cabin In the Woods and didnt understand why it was memed so hard here. Same with It Follows.
so we still have new posters on this board? Nice.
Atmosphere was the only thing this had going for it. It was fucking painful to watch.
0nly u d0nt haha fuk 0ut hea
>you're just mad it's not a social commentary you agree with
So you liked "Dragged Across Concrete", I take it.
I'll grant you that it's kind of irritating that every other horror movie is a metaphor for mental illness of some sort but there are still jump scares, just used more sparingly. The "spine-tingling no jump scares slow burn" thing is mostly a meme, I'm not sure who the people are who push it and I don't know what horror movies they enjoy watching. Also, adding in an excess of jump scares is just a cheap way to create horror, the best older horror movies understood this and used them rarely in order to get the best effect.
youtube.com
This video is an example of a good jump scare because it is basically the only one in the movie and the build up to it works.
Me either. It was a comedy, not a horror movie. The only truly scary self-aware horror movie is still In the Mouth of Madness.
>Why can't movies be social commentaries?
They can. Occasionally.
NOT
EVERY
SINGLE
FUCKING
MOVIE
OR
TELEVISION
SHOW
i liked it. It was probably my favorite movie of that year.
Like 70s horror movies?
Swap hereditary and lighthouse.
Lighthouse was an exercise in how to dupe idiots into praising a film made of nothing but nice camerawork and funny accents. It was an incoherent mess.
If you have to let your audience argue over the meaning of your film, you have failed as a storyteller. You're just a cameraman who can't write, so leaves the writing part to the audience. You're damon lindeloff.
And what would you prefer? More found footage flicks? More conjuring-verse schlock made up of 90% cheap jump scares you can see coming a mile away? These hipster slow burn A24 flicks are an improvement to the genre
I dont mind the hipster horror. It's a big genre with a lot of random stuff produced, the critics and press focus on the hipster stuff but the other movies are still out there
