The justifications offered for the change are schizophrenic and weak. First they'll say there aren't enough female characters, but that's simply not true. (Jessica, Alia, Chani, Irulan, Shadout Mapes, and the entire Bene Gesserit). Then they'll say Liet's race and gender don't matter, so don't worry about it. Then they'll add that it's actually quite significant that Liet be female, since the character acts as a mediator and an ecologist, roles they assert are womanly by nature.

Except nothing they argue holds merit.

The character's race does matter. Liet Kynes was the son of Pardot Kynes and a Fremen woman. If the fremen are taken to be ethnically Arab or Tuareg, then Liet should be half-white, half lightbrown. That half-breed status let's him exist within Fremen world despite being an outsider. Making Liet a full blooded sub-sarharan African confuses the character's heritage in a setting in which heritage matters.

Additionally, Gender very much matters in Dune. Pardot and Liet Kynes were imperial agents on arrakis. In the setting, men wield hard power, women wield soft power. You never see women leading a noble house. You never see women leading a Fremen sietch, or a company of smugglers. The fact that the Emperor had only daughters was of plot significance because they couldn't inherit the throne. A woman would not have been assigned to be the imperial planetologist and judge of the change during a delicate political maneuver. A woman would not have been taken seriously by the patriarchal Fremen. Rewriting the character to make it so violates a key theme of the story and diminishes the adaptation in the hopes of scoring a cheap brownie point with woke capital

I already read them years ago from the public library, but I always wanted to own them and now it's the perfect time - before they'll print them with those awful movie covers and slap a "from the hit movie!" sticker on them.
