He intentionally took back control from Robert without telling him. He was scared of thunderstorms but had a lot of time to ask the senior pilot for advice before he went to sleep and never did. He could have asked Robert to take over when shit hit the fan. He could have not lied to the other pilots about continuously climbing. He could have done a million things that were less retarded than what he did. His stupidity seems almost malignant.
