Action in Totoro is inside the characters. The girls and the father are trying to show a good face the entire movie, but all of them, mostly the girls, are very worried.
Totoro (doesn't matter if you take Totoro as something symbolic or literal) is what makes the girls surprass the Tuberculosis of their mother.
The characters are great and the story is slow and subtle, but definitely not boring.

Yeah, Kiki isn't a typical number one but it's definitely mine. Probably some combination of being a coming of age story, having a simple plot and focusing more on the characters and having my favorite soundtrack. For me, it's Kiki's Delivery Service.
