Season 1 is trash since the character of Blackadder was not his usual smarmy self but a dimwit- they would later pass this on to Baldrick and Hugh Laurie's character. Season 2 is ok but pretty rough around the edges with much of the writing still. Season 3 is where it starts to get great- extremely witty writing and the start of what people consider to be the classic episodes. Many people consider it the best. Personally I think Season 4 is the greatest of the bunch and even has some well-done dramatic moments such as the charge over the top which still makes me tear up.

If you want to get into Blackadder, try some season 3 and 4 eps. If you don't like them you won't like anything else from the show. The Christmas special is pretty good too but you need the character context of having watched the proper episodes.

It's still good but Blackadder is more reminiscent of Mr. Bean. It's the worst series but still better than many others.

I'm American. This series got me through some hard times at college a few years back. I like the second season the most because I think it's the funniest. A highlight is when Blackadder and co make gold, or so they think. First season is very comfy and Edmund's duel with McAngus is a highlight. My least favorite is the fourth because I'm not a big fan of the setting. Overall I'd rank them like this:
