For the feature film adaptation...

>For the feature film adaptation, Villeneuve tells Vanity Fair that he’s expanded the role of Paul’s mother Lady Jessica, played by Rebecca Ferguson. She is “even more fearsome than before” in the script, serving a greater role in defending and training Paul, and Ferguson tells Vanity Fair the changes were for the better, stating that “Denis was very respectful of Frank’s work in the book, [but] the quality of the arcs for much of the women have been brought up to a new level. There were some shifts he did, and they are beautifully portrayed now.”

>Another major change involves the character of Dr. Liet Kynes, who in the book is an imperial Planetologist and serves as an independent broker on the planet of Arrakis. In the book. Dr. Liet Kynes is a male character, but in Villeneuve’s version she’s a woman, played by Sharon Duncan-Brewster. The actress tells Vanity Fair that Villeneuve gender-flipped the character because of the story’s lack of female characters.

>For Villeneuve, this 55-year-old story about a planet being mined to death was not merely a space adventure, but a prophecy. “No matter what you believe, Earth is changing, and we will have to adapt,” he says. “That’s why I think that Dune, this book, was written in the 20th century. It was a distant portrait of the reality of the oil and the capitalism and the exploitation—the overexploitation—of Earth. Today, things are just worse. It’s a coming-of-age story, but also a call for action for the youth.”

>STOP MOVING RIGHT NOW I SENSE ONE OF THE GREAT SANDWORMS APPROACHING
>denis this is just a movie. denis pls

And I’m fine with all of that.

herbert was fanatically devoted to his wife and women at large to the point where he unironically believed they have psychic powers. why would you NEED to expand any of these roles, the innate spiritual value of the mother is a major theme
they’re creating problems where none exist

>Today, things are just worse.
And that's why I cast more wahmen.

"I touched her breast like this! That's the closest I ever got to a woman... "

>And I’m fine with all of that.

"The actress tells Vanity Fair that Villeneuve gender-flipped the character because of the story’s lack of female characters"
And that's how you know these fucks haven't read a single page. Can't fucking turn a page without tripping over a woman.

lol

Uhh. Jessica is one of the most important characters in Dune.

YAAAASSSSSS

>The actress tells Vanity Fair that Villeneuve gender-flipped the character because of the story’s lack of female characters.

Oh, dear.

>why would you NEED to expand any of these roles, the innate spiritual value of the mother is a major theme
easy to get across in a book full of monologues, not so much in a film.

>lots of women
>respectful depictions of race
>incorporation of non-christian religious principles
for a sci fi series made in the sixties dune is about as pc as it gets. what is their fucking problem

This entire fucking series ends up being all about females if you read it. Literally ends up being about two female dominated groups going to war.

>Fish Speakers
>Bene Gesserit
>Honored Matres

Why is everyone so fucking retarded?

>the innate spiritual value of the mother is a major theme
they don't care about that. maybe herbert did, but not hollywood kikes. they don't care about the differences between the sexes, they don't care how men and women are wired to fit together and ideally complete each other like 2 puzzle pieces.
they care about yas kween slay and unironically want to #draftourdaughters. they care about crushing the unique aspects of both sexes so that everyone can be the same type of worker/consumer. they want men and women to be enemies rather than partners.

Dune is simply not suited for tv

>Denis was very respectful of Frank’s work in the book, [but]
lol

Is this the new marketing/damage control strategy? Try to get out ahead of the obvious blunders by listing them all, then having shills nod to each other and go
>I'm fine with that.
>what's the big deal?
>after all, changes are necessary in an book to film adaptation.

I don't understand how that's true when Lady Jessica already takes up a significant portion of the source material, almost to the point of being the primary protagonist in certain parts of the book.

>and that's a good thing!

wait until you'll see netflix warhammer 40k...

>story about a planet being mined to death
is that really what they took from this? Pretty sure a major plot point is that Liet's plan to terraform the planet would actually end the worms and the spice

FEMALE EMPOWERMENT

This movie is being produced by . obviously they have to send a "so progressive gender roles huehue" message even at the cost of ignoring that the book already did it but for real

armored bulldykes

Arrakis wasn't being used up in the novel. Spice operations were mainly in the northern hemisphere of the planet - and really only a small portion of that. Not sure how Villanova got it wrong.

Officially changing my mind - it's gonna suck.

man that honestly just really bums me out. I just read the novel a few months ago and was really excited till now. Ill try to reserve judgement until the films released, but my excitement for the project has definitely dropped considerably

I for one am glad people are realizing Villeneuve is a hack, never understood Yas Forums's boner for him. Dude just makes one-dimensional Hollywood flicks with pretty images, he doesn't have anything interesting or new to say.

I've got some ideas for expanding Jessica's role.

Underrated post

Shocked at how cheap the costumes look

I pray for a renaissance, or even a revolution, when once again entertainment can be made free of agendas. Until then, fuck this movie and I love Dune.

>DAE capitalism bad?
god i hate these smarmy fucks so much

I'm just not going to see it desu.
Won't even pirate it, don't need pandering propaganda in my life, and I sure as shit don't need to spend 2 hours watching that Zendaya goblina appear intermittently.

Dune is about the power that comes from having a monopoly on an essential resource like spice, water, oil, etc... But it's not about overmining (spice is a renewable resource on Arrakis, it's just not produced on any other planet) and it's not about climate change (at least in the 21st century definition of the phrase).

>Officially changing my mind - it's gonna suck.
Of course it will.
