Marathon it now. The first season or so is slow, but it's a highly character-driven show, and all the characters become more interesting as the series progresses. It's very stylish and, in many but not all of the subjects it treats, true to life. You also get to participate in Mad Men threads more fully; there's a non-zero chance that this one will take off.

The car that Don drives for much of the series is definitely pre-malaise. The cars in the show are so kino because they're from the early to mid 60s in large part. Those years were the high water mark for high-displacement and high output engines, all-steel bodies, generous interiors, and soft suspensions in full-size cars. There's a lot to like about them! The malaise-era started in the early-70s when smog equipment became mandatory, power output declined, and design went from rather minimalist to overwrought, though rides remained pretty comfortable. Some of the best scenes in Mad Men involve Don and one of his cars.
