Season 2 had a really interesting premise that they completely wasted. The setting is interesting until they abandon it fairly early, the supporting cast is solid but the make and female leads are awful, the plot starts off strong but the mystery is ruined a few episodes in and is then just dragged along for the rest of the season. With better leads and writing it could have been good but it just shits itself really early and just keeps putting on more pants to try and hide the smell instead of cleaning the original pair.

In the books, probably. He's more of a one-dimensional cartoon villain.
In the show, it's more complicated. The showrunner didn't expect for the Hickey character to be this popular. Tunnbaaq is the true villain in the end. In an interview, Adam Nagaitis interpreted that his character was in love with Gibson and was generally upset when he betrayed him and when he killed him, it was just shorting the inevitable.
