not an insignificant role, but yes not one that absolutely must be played by a man. in a novel like this that is so full of brown and female characters it would be entirely unnecessary to make this change for social justice points, especially with a no-name actress. this is a talking point for a few hours and that's about it. perhaps they merely tweaked the role to fit the adaptation and found an actor that suited it. I find it more bizarre that an actress best known for eastenders and FIFA has ended up in a dune adaptation

Nobody likes chimps. Even if the character is supposedly insiginficant (which Kynes is not) making the character a woman and a chimp is simply wrong.

It does matter. Liet Kynes was the son of Pardot Kynes and a Fremen woman. If the fremen are taken to be ethnically Arab or Tuareg, then List should be half-white, half lightbrown. That half-breed status let's him exist within Fremen world despite being an outsider. Making Liet a full blooded sub-sarharan African confuses the character's heritage in a setting in which heritage matters.

Additionally, Pardot and Liet Kynes were imperial agents on arrakis. They held a government position. In the Dune setting, men wield hard power, women wield soft power. You never see women leading a noble house. You never see women leading a Fremen sietch. The fact that the Emperor had only daughters was of plot significance because GENDER MATTERS IN DUNE. A woman would not have been assigned to be the imperial planetologist and judge of the change during a delicate political maneuver. A woman would not have been taken seriously by the patriarchal Fremen. Rewriting the character to make it so violates a key theme of the story.
