3 hours of banal conversations and graphic lesbian sex, what's the point?

I feel positive that the lesbian scenes in BITWC are explicit. The actresses commented a lot about how much the director Kechiche asked them to go beyond what they ever thought they would be comfortable with. They watched the final cut of the movie for the first time at Cannes. It was only after that and the immediate questions about explicitness that they scrambled to come up with a weak cover story. The prosthetics explanation doesn't seem remotely plausible when you look at the above clip but serves to placate their family and the media at large.

I am convinced they went as far as they did, trusting the director would produce a tasteful edit of their activities. And when he cut such an explicit film, the felt betrayed and had a falling out with him. Especially Léa who has said she would never work with him again. Adele seems to have mixed feelings given that the film resulted in such acclaim for her talents and launched her career.

What's most interested to me is that they filmed the sex scenes 10 hours a day for a week. Imagine how much explicit, pornographic footage the director has. How many orgasms the actresses had that were captured on camera. We witness at least three in the long sex scene - two from Adele and one from Lea. And I believe another one from each of them during the tribbing. They are actually shown rimming on camera - although not explicit, it's clear that mouth and tongue are on the asshole. The director filmed close to 70 hours of raw sex, with the girls devouring each other and edited it down to 10 minutes. He must have literally hours of footage that shows explicit finger penetration, tongue on pussy, the actresses cumming over and over.

10 day director's cut when?

Kechiche promised to release a director's cut. He was pissed at Lea and at the time insinuated that his director's cut would include footage that would further expose her. I understand he has been distracted with a new film, but the Criterion website still references a forthcoming special edition. I can't help but think that any director's treatment would necessarily include a lot of additional coverage in the form of discussion and footage of the sex scenes since they seemed to be such a strong theme of commentary about the film. I hope he channels his spite for Lea into an full blown pornographic release.

I should add that, despite ample hope, I see no evidence that Adele's boy-girl sex scene contained actual penetration. Clear the actor had a raging erection and there are some very explicit shots of Adele's labia and anus that are visible in frames near the one included above. However, his penis is dry and there is no clear indications of penetration.

Lastly I will say that I'm encouraged by the fact that both actresses careers seem to be bolstered by the performance. This is unlike other actresses that have gone the extra mile (e.g. Margo Stilley, Kerry Fox) in albeit lesser films. It bodes well for the future of explicit film making and for other actresses considering taking the leap.
