Man vs giant bug on barren planet. But, main character's personality basically shuts down and something he calls "the engine" (basically fight or flight instinct) takes hold in combat and keeps him alive via killing everything.
Due to an error in record keeping, he winds up doing way more drops than he should have had to and yet is somehow alive despite all odds. Think starship troopers but more brutal with ptsd playing into it all
There is sorta a side story in which they flash forward to someone who finds the armor's helmet and watches recordings of the guy's life and the story gets told (partially) that way.

I've always thought that Logan's Run is a movie that really deserves a remake. The movie itself is shit but the premise is interesting, thus making it the perfect candidate imo. Also in answer to your question Rendezvous With Rama would make an awesome movie in the vein of 2001.

RWR would only works as a tv movie. There's no real climax beyond the ship spinning off into space and the astronauts trying to get out. If still like to see it made.
