I have never felt more out of touch than now. I understand that at a certain point you become big enough that you can finance cool things like renting out a luxury doomsday bunker for a day. Once you reach that level, your unusual adventures become interesting enough that you might be able to pull in viewers. I just don't understand how he got that big.

It's a mix of algorithm manipulation, talent (this covers your ability to be funny/entertaining/charismatic), following hot trends, understanding what top youtubers are doing that made them top youtubers, and a shit ton of luck. You also need a shit ton of perseverance. Your first few videos will probably get you 200-300 views at the most, no one will subscribe to you and you'll feel like you're wasting your time. You need perseverance to push on and keep making videos even if it feels like no one is watching them, and not a lot of people can do that.
