It's really good on it's own, if you stay away from the hype and memes. It's like the game Portal was back in the day, in that it's a short, fun, relatively unique experience that you have to shove through piles of dead memes and blown up hype to actually enjoy.

It never reached the potential that was there. Could have really been something if it wasn't cancelled. The movie shit didn't cut it.

This. At the time it was very impressive, because it was judicious in its use of cgi/greenscreens and looked incredible for a television show. The fanbase is obnoxious as hell, and it is too short, but as others have observed it probably would have gone to shit before too long.

What was IN the movie itself might have worked fleshed out in minor bits over another season or two. Built properly into an overarching storyline, not just thrown out there like "here you go, this is what we were going to do" in a film runtime.
But it's Whedon so really who knows if he could've made it into something or botched it all.

The chemistry is really good between the cast and characters. A nice "used universe" feel in the technology.

If you like westerns and sci-fi it's both, and it works.

Yes. I knew a few people who for years praised this like it was the second coming. Well it certainly isn't bad but I'd rather watch Outlaw Star to be honest. Also it was really jarring seeing the soldiers in the Starship Troopers costumes.

It was the thing I appreciated most about the Deadwood movie, they just made it like an extended episode of the series set years later, they didn't try to cram in all the rest of the story.

I would suggest watching the original TV order instead of the DVD order. If you start with the first pilot Serenity (not the movie), it has a different tone than the rest of the series which is more light-hearted.
