Is horror the hardest genre?

Thousands of movies and no good ones.
Is it just a shitty genre?
Even in the rarest of occasions when you find an actual decent horror movie, it's either:
a.psychological slow burn aka onions reddit horror (the witch, rosemary baby)
b.good movie, but not scary (Vargtimmen)
d.scary but the movie itself is not that great(scary is personal opinion, so I don't wanna give examples and be called a bitch for being scared)
c.just fun horror, like the majority of slashers (chainsaw massacre)
e.outdated (german expressionist movies)

>Is it just a shitty genre?

Yep

The problem is that people go into horror films expecting to get scared. The good horror films are ones that explore fear as an emotion, and not necessarily trying create fear within the viewer. Also, what's wrong with fun horror films or old horror films?

>The problem is that people go into horror films expecting to get scared
because that's the point of horror movies
>what's wrong with fun horror films or old horror films?
both of them aren't scary

Not the user you replied to, but I think that fear works best when unexpected or when its a surprise. If you're gonna watch a scary movie you will anticipate the scary moments. What if you watched a movie marketed as a romance drama, but it slowly and unexpectedly turns into a horror/psychological thriller? If a movie like that existed and was done well, it would be amazing

Its a patrician genre. No surprise that it filters most people

>Thousands of movies and no good ones.
Spotted the fucking sodomite that has jacked off to so much gay porn he is desensitized to everything.

Horror has hundreds of good movies.
Often times they are better than the shit you guys post on here.

People unironically like fucking Star Wars on this website for christ sake.

What about Alligator? Beyond the Darkness? The Uncanny? The Evil Dead? Literally hundreds of movies better than that Disney spewing garbage.

People like Avatar, but what about Dark Waters? What about Black Christmas? What about The Long Weekend? Or literally hundreds of other movies that are better.

Fuck out of here you god damn newfag.

>shits on other people's opinions
>too chickenshit to post his own

>because that's the point of horror movies
Most people actually do get scared by basic bitch scary movies. Bet you think you're tough because you refuse to immerse yourself in a movie then proclaim at the end 'it's shit because it didn't scare me'

There are movies that are considered both good and scary, eg.
>The Shining
>The Exorcist
>The Silence of the Lambs
just to mention some uncontroversial classics. These might not scare modern audiences anymor though. There's also some more out there stuff that is sort of horror, like some of Lynch's movies or Cronenberg, that is critically acclaimed mostly. I personally think Martyrs is an example of a great movie that is also scary(at first), but it's very divisive so not the best example. Maybe that is the problem in general- due to the nature of horror people don't agree on whether something is scary most of the time, and the material is often so shocking that many critics will be displeased with it for that reason. There is almost a tension between the goal of instilling horror and those that most critics seem to care about.

I didnt like the movie myself but it seems like Hereditary managed to be praised by both critics and large audiences who found it genuinely spooky

>horror has no good movies
>watch genetic woman action movie #1312 or cuckhold feels bad about war #85

Blairwitch is still the scariest movie if you use suspension of disbelief

I heard that martyrs is a gore fest. Is that true? I cant stand watching gorefests

not even the best found footage horror

>I'm going to broadly generalize and ignore the fact that i'm a cherry picking faggot who just so happens to not like a particular genre so I'm going to say they all suck

unfortunately yes there is a lot of gore, and many people think it's just torture porn. I think there is a lot more going on than that and there's a reason you have to watch all that unpleasant shit(a way to at least weakly evoke the trauma of the characters in the audience) but it is definitely in there.

Good horror is really hard to make but for me comedy is the hardest genre. Humor is so subjectiv it is hard to even make an okay comedy. But i guess its just hard to make a good xyz genre movie

>foreign film
into the trash it goes

That's David Lynch movies for me. The brief moments that are terrifying in Mulholland Drive and Inland Empire are so jarring and so shocking it's like having a waking nightmare.

You're not really so stupid that you can't get into horror, right? Do you also not let yourself enjoy amusement parks?

why's the title capsule but the credits at the bottom say among the dead?

Like in Parasite.
It was kind of scary when they were in the basement and the camera was moving in the long corridor.

This is the legitimate concern I have for most of Yas Forums.

>whoa I can totally relate to capeshit
>whoa I can totally relate to unrealistic drama that never happens to the average family
>whoa i can totally relate to war even though i'm a coward and have never served
>whoa i can totally relate to boats even though i lack the commitment or dedication needed to serve on one
>whoa i can totally relate to x

>what? horror? it's not scary, i can't relate to this

Not being able to relate to horror shows a huge lack of either empathy or imagination.

Nothing scares me, I've been watching horror movies since I was a small child. My dad grew up in the 70s as a teen and loved grindhouse style movies. So naturally I got into it.
I have zero issues being able to self insert and imagine being scared though.
It's just fun, if you can't do this as an adult something is seriously wrong with your brain.
I can't imagine being only twenty something years old and already acting like an old ass man.

Meanwhile I'm 32 and still love watching horror movies.
I prefer animal horror from the early 80s.
Watching pic related right now.

Thor best doggo.

horror movies are only fun when you are younger than 13

The problem is that horror is a feeling, so trying to make an entire movie based around that feeling is extensively difficult. You can have horror MOMENTS in movies and it's not too hard, but actually making an entire story around it? Yeah, it can be difficult.

It's the same thing with sex and porn. Porn movies are terrible and at this point are just tongue-in-cheek shams, a cover for the reason everyone watches it to begin with. It's possible to make a movie based around sex and constantly focusing on the feeling of arousal, but making an entire story around that is extremely difficult - so most people just opt for the lazy route. At this point, most horror movies are the equivalent of shitty brazzers videos - the story is just a cover for the SPOOKY SCARY jump scares, violin screeches, and other low-brow bullshit.

If you want a good horror movie, you first have to know what makes a good MOVIE. Alien, The Exorcist, and the Thing are great movies even if they don't scare you. As pointed out, it's about exploring fear as an emotion rather than constantly trying to illicit it.

The David Cronenberg Fly is one of the most terrifying movies to me, because what's happening to Brundle is so horrific and Goldblum plays it so natural and relatable that it makes you think about your own body failing you and being powerless to do anything, if not from turning into a Fly, things like cancer or diseases, it's a terrifying thought.

Empathy is a cuck trait. KYS.

you lost that bet, I'm scared by a lot of movies, but they're aren't that great
Blairwitch was the scariest movie I've ever watched for the simple fact that everyone told me it was real when I was a kid. I guess that's why exorcist movies are so scary to christians

Interesting analogy

Its not that horror is inherently shitty its that there is an active interest from Hollywood to keep producing cheaply made (often low effort too) horror for teens because even if its dumb and lazy it still has a good chance to make its money back.

>d.scary but the movie itself is not that great
Imagine not even reading OP and just strawmanning right off the bat

society is too desensitized for horror because we see it constantly on a daily basis, so the genre is just boring

This too. It's become a quantity over quality thing. Best example of this approach is Hulu commissioning shitloads of shitty horror movies from blumhouse - literally all of them are awful, but they get to say "look at all these movies we have!".

>being this mad that someone called you out on your bullshit

Ok woman.

>Star Wars is bad
The originals are well made and well acted
