They are also bad at conveying meaning through image, its like something they think about in words then use their formulaic and paid for art skill to convert into image, it comes off as desperate to please.

It's just the easiest way to visually convey mental strain I guess even though that's not how it actually works. I don't like how cheap it's become, if they really wanted to show how doing something powerful was fucking them they should be bleeding from the eyes and ears as well because that would actually appear more painful/strenuous... but then again if every film started doing that it too would lose all impact
