If you kill someone who is a perpetual killer then you are saving people from being killed. Every time Batman didn't kill the Joker he's just as responsible for the deaths of any of his future victims. Truth is that Batman doesn't care about people. He just wants an excuse to beat up the people he thinks are responsible for killing his mommy and daddy and thinks by not killing them it makes him a better person. Batman only cares about himself.
