Thread for the intellectual discussion of arthouse and classic cinema.
/film/
Nice room OP, is this where you watch movies?
gone off film. I now read books as I have an high IQ.
up to the Half Blood Prince.
Yes. Here's the neighborhood view
no one here gives a fuck about film
Which filmmaker represents the apex of montage inspired cinema, who relies primarily on editing, specifically quick cuts, as opposed to mise en scene?
Pierre Jules César Janssen
>very good first 20 minutes
>1 hour of bullshit mixed with some decent scenes
>almost 2 hours of mystery comedy kino masterpiece
What was Rivette thinking with this structure? Was he trying to plebfilter me or what? Also the last shot is hilarious.
What other Rivette's films should i watch now?
I want to fuck Julie
>What other Rivette's films should i watch now?
Try Duelle. It's more opaque, yet "tighter"
Looks a bit like one girl in HS that I had the hots for
Ozu interiors are the comfiest interiors
Ozu didn't really experiment much with different themes, storys or visuals but his movies are good.
Depends on what you mean by "experimented". Literally no one else before or since made films in his style. That said, he did make some gangster films and comedies during the silent era
Based
It's by far his best film so unfortunately there's nowhere to go but down
What are your favourites from him?
>Duelle
>the only functional torrent is 32GB
I will have to wait with that. I have to free some space on my computer.
I haven't seen much from him, but I've heard it's mid-tier Rivette. What do you think of La religieuse, L'amour fou, Duelle (une quarantine), and his other acclaimed films?
>>the only functional torrent is 32GB
Where do you get your torrents? You can literally watch the film on online video-hosting sites, such as vk.com:

I actually forgot about La Belle Noiseuse but if you think Celine and Julie is a pleb filter oh boy that one will bore the shit out of you. It's fantastic though.
I don't like streaming that much. The image quality is not that great.
I have that on my computer. I also have The Nun and Le Pond Du Nord.
visit rutracker
Have you seen The Duchess of Langeais? I haven't heard much about it but what I've heard has been good overall. Seems like it's not very popular at all but then again I wouldn't expect a more modern Rivette to be popular.
Hello, what is the best The Archers' film?
I have only seen Celine and Julie. Seems like Rivette is not that popular but his films are quite highly rated.
>that one will bore the shit out of you
it does have plenty of nudes of Emmanuelle Beart to distract you tho
I haven't seen too many but The Red Shoes is what did it for me the most so far. Boring choice but whatever.
He's not, he mostly had notoriety for Out1 being one of the longest films ever made, which I haven't seen (and generally I don't have interest in seeing something that's only praised for length)
currently watching Fassbinder's Martha
what will I think of it?
I don't think it's only praised for that. Jonathan Rosenbaum is quite the champion of Rivette. Especially Out 1, L'Amour Fou and Celine and Julie. Also Out 1 was supposed to be a TV show so it's not like it's a Lav Diaz film.
A Matter of Life and Death and Colonel Blimp
It's pretty intense and good
Tales of Hoffmann
Honey boy was so beautiful I feel gross watching because it feels so personal
These are miniature props right?
Can I ask why? I pretty much hated the structure of it, thought it was poorly directed, and wasn't into Hedges' performance at all. Shia and the kid were pretty good I guess, but that's about it. Very middling.
No, the actual set.
haha look at this anime-tier camera movement
wtf Fass
>watch any french new wave film
>realize i'll never get to marry any of the girls in the films
what's the point bros
wtf I genuinely don't remember that moment
But I do think there were some spinning camera parts near the end
>No, the actual set.
Looks fake as fuck
What's /film/'s opinion on Raul Ruiz?
City of Pirates and Three Crowns of the Sailor are based.
Haven't seen the others. Mysteries of Lisbon bored me and I turned it off. I'll probably give it another chance some other time
>Three Crowns of the Sailor
>cinematography by Sacha Vierny
That does indeed sound based
Duelle is a must, Le Religieuse is meh, i really like the ending scene.
Just watched this, I think it's a lot better than The Servant. What do you fellows think?
Picrel is kino as fuck, one of the best from 2019
I've only seen City of Pirates, but it was absolute kino. I need to check out more of his stuff.
>Obayashi dies
>No /film/ thread starting with a frame from his movies
you sicken me
Fine, you start the next /film/ thread after this one expires. Picrel seems like a good Obayashi image
Ok Dreyerfags and Bressonvirgins, make pass to the greatest Joan of Arc movie adaptation ever made. And it's the greatest because it's A M E R I C A N
FUCK EUROPOORS, YOU AIN'T NOTHING COMPARED TO GLORIOUS AMERICAN CINEMATIC EXPERIENCE
>Joan the Woman
THEY EVEN FUCKED UP THE TITLE
1. Bresson
2. Rivette
The rest is irrelevant.
One single frame text and it's better than any other adaptation
k i n o
btw the adaptation is 4 minutes. The next 2 hours of the film is a World War I film where a guy finds her sword and make an assault against german troops. The End.
It was another time...
absolute kino
cinema is dead.
hi Robert
Is this from an ozu movie?
Yes
RIP :(
Nicolas Roeg
