historically they were planning rebellion against the romans but didn't want one to happen without them sitting at the top to profit off the potential victory.
basically christ came along and had the right stuff for a mass movement/revolt but his disdain for their rule made him unsuitable for their purposes.
so they wanted to deliver the christ to the romans as an usurper so the romans would potentially lower their guard which would allow them to raise their forces in secret while in the governor's favor.
of course it all backfired.
jews go too far in their greed. it is the source of their downfall in every story and myth.
