I understand them not wanting to give too much time to the villain's backstory with the rest of the family drama that was going on, not that I agree just understand, but I felt that there was an easy way to work around all of it. Just make Charles Dance Conrad from Skull Island.

It’s kind of vague but the novel has an expanded scene set during the battle between the Navy and Ghidorah and Rodan in Washington D.C.
As Rodan and Ghidorah are sinking ships left and right the main characters get a video transmission from Stenz, who was using an attack submarine as his flagship
The transmission is described as garbled but it’s clear that the sub is on fire and filling up with water before it suddenly cuts out, and one character speculated that the sub may have exploded
Stenz is never seen again afterwards so it can be assumed he’s probably dead but it’s vague enough he might be alive

Shin Godzilla, GMK, and the 1990s Gamera trilogy are generally considered among the best. Godzilla 2000's also a pretty fun time, recommend it
