Rabies, a virus that does infect brain cells, can have an incubation period as little as 5 days. and death can occur in as few as 2 days after onset of symptoms, which seems even shorter than how quickly people were dying in the movie after their symptoms first appeared.

Is there anything exactly like it in real life? No, but nothing like it existed in the movie until a bat infected with one virus was able to infect a pig with another virus and they recombined. The exact same way new virus strains come to be in reality.

It's never made known in the movie, since half her immune system came from her dad (who was immune) and the other half came from her mother (who likely wasn't). Since what it is about the dad that made him immune isn't know, the only way to find out for the daughter would be to expose her and see if she got sick.
