the appeal is that it's about a small town which weird shit goes on, particularly supernatural murders, and it's done in such a way that resembles a dream-like soap opera. It's hard to describe beyond that since it's not really like any other TV show or movie.
The whole series offers plenty of twists, turns, and things to be left to interpretation. Oh and if you get into it, don't expect any fan service in the movie or season 3. They're still excellent though.
