sucks that author introduced some neat characters like Kuroko, Mokuro / Yomi and didn't really get to do anything with them. Demon Yusuke fighting Sensui was where I dropped the series and didn't finish it till like 10 years later

Sensui vs Yusuke in the cave was pure kino though, just yusukes revival / powerup was too asspully

Hunter x Hunter is much more well written but it takes a while to get going. Some people call it a "shounen deconstruction" but mostly it just plays with a lot of shounen tropes and does subversive things in the arc structure
I kind of wish they did more with the personalities just since they were there. We only saw like 2 1/2 of the 7

If they did literally any foreshadowing for it, then it would have been okay. Like, we didn't pick Yusuke for no reason. Or you know about his father. Just little ominous lines or whatever. Or you know, just let Kuwabara cut through the fucker and never made him S class out of nowhere.

something about HxH I'm not sure a lot of people know. Obviously Togashi is the main author of YYH and HxH but he's literally married to the author of Sailor Moon. I find this interesting because YYH is more a story for younger boys and Sailor Moon is obviously targeted at younger girls. They got married in the first year of HxH's publication and I only bring this up because they're both extremely experienced manga authors at the point of HxHs release and even though Togashi is the big name attached to HxH, there's no telling how involved she is / was in the creation process of HxH

I will say that HxH is a bit more straight forward and "gender neutral", and the actual extent of her involvement in the series leaves me very curious. Sailor Moon is a very fun series after all

He faced an important guy and both Hiei and Yusuke faced the top tier in the series.
Mukuro was the strongest character in the series when she fought Hiei.

I was buying YYH dvds monthly as the eng dub was releasing back then. I felt betrayed with the way yusuke was revived and the powercreep on both him and sensui. There final conflict was too Dragon Ball for me, they were both flying around and shit and blowing up mountains. When I first watched YYH it was the yusuke vs the final saint beast guy on adult swim, they marathoned like 6 episodes. The only other anime I'd ever seen was shit like pokemon and dragon ball and immediately the way fights were somewhat "grounded in reality" yet still had there powers just really captivated me since I was so used to DBZ style fighting. I think YYH remained fairly grounded in the way it used the power system up until demon yusuke revival / sensui fight in demon world

I'm at peace with it all now and can actually watch that fight / final arc and I pretty much "get the picture" on why Togashi ended that fight the way he did and then ended the series only like 25 chapters later

I will say as much as I love YYH, Hunter x Hunter really blows it away in terms of writing quality

I always rewatched YYH starting with when they're doing the combat shounen shit. I only recently saw the first episodes and I was surprised how real and emotional it was.

I feel like it’s a solid conclusion for the series.

the last 6 or 7 episodes of YYH aren't even canon, or rather they're like 15-20% canon and the rest is made up filler from the anime production staff. It's not all bad, the anime did have a good ending / messages and Yomi vs Yusuke was mostly satisfying

Watching it while it aired on TV, before internet spoilers was what made it so amazing for most fans.

Here was Sensui. They were fighting him for many episodes. He defeated Koenma's technique. He defeated Yusuke. Then he defeated all his friends at the same time who used all they had. Then he was beating a revived, repowered Yusuke. He looked like some unbeatable fighter.
And after weeks of seeing that guy easily dealing with the heroes, Raizen appears and dominates him.

For most of the fans at the time, it was very satisfying.

YYH had like a 300 to 400% decline in popularity from the end of dark tournament till the end of chapter black. I wish I'd saved those charts, they're old shounen jump popularity polls that I've seen a couple times on Yas Forums. I watched it in the same manner as you though, the thing is when it was on toonami they never made it past the dark touranment and I was still in middle school so I couldn't watch it on adult swim. I'd probably spent like 200$ on DVDs to watch the series and was just disappointed. Obviously I wanted to see Sensui beaten, I just wasn't into the way that it happened

In my country, they aired the entire series.
The "Toguro tournament" was the most popular arc, but the end of the Sensui fight was considered a higher point than the end of Toguro's fight to most of the people I talked to.

I will say I did like the demon world / Raizen plot-line, I just REALLY didn't like the way it was introduced. They spent half an episode giving Yusukue this giant dramatic death, but now he comes back to life out of nowhere, joking around like nothing happened and now he's as powerful as sensui

I will say, Sensui vs Yusuke in the cave is the highlight of YYH for me though, it's my favorite conflict in the series

I've always thought that YYH was much more of a feminine show. It sounds strange but compare it to any other shonen at the time, like DBZ for example. It's made with much more tact and intelligence for an average fighting anime. There is emphasis on elaborate storylines and character dynamics rather than what would interest regular boys at that age. Even the main character, becomes a literal demon god, can bang any underworld pussy on the planet, commits to 1 human girl. Same goes for every character, none of them do anything that would be extremely masculine despite being delinquents.
