The movie is like the prison experiment in a way. You see their conscious get stripped away and their subconscious take over.

The lighthouse was a placeholder for anything of power, such as wealth or wisdom. But because they were going crazy, their subconscious saw that as power and so the conflict begins.

Dafoe's character was the greek character Proteus and R-Pat was Prometheus. The entire framing of the conflict for the lighthouse makes much more sense when you realize that.

The Lighthouse is literally a movie that women can't understand. And include feminine men in there too.

Men compete with each other and size one another up constantly. We want to feel powerful in a social hierarchy and that status delegates sex as well.

If you put two men on an island, they'd fight over a coconut because they think he who controls the food controls the island. They would kill each other for a coconut. The same concept is in The Lighthouse. In the end, it was just a lighthouse, but it goes deeper into the subconscious struggle of men and how we were witnessing a small micro-scale interaction of what happens on the macro-scale in our daily lives with actual things of power we fight over.
