Alien is great because it is pretty much right at the intersection between 70's new wave auteur piece, B-movie creature feature and high budget studio picture. There is no other film in my memory that satisfies every possible motive for making a movie. It changed how people viewed horror and science fiction, it surprised people, it put the weight of the film on an unknown woman, and it somehow made a shit ton of money doing it. It has the best cast of any horror film IMO, every single death hits without a hint of slasher flick cynicism that would follow the next four decades.

Aliens is another movie I love, James Cameron is a fucking legend and somehow turned this slow meditative horror movie into an action thriller. Do I like it more than Alien? No. I mean look no further than the throwaway line where the space marines talk about fucking other aliens (Arcturians?) on another planet. It's a brief moment but it sort of summarizes how James sees science fiction versus how a young Ridley Scott did--in the original there are no space opera elements whatsoever, the Nostromo crew are not adventurers or terraforming colonists or super badass space soldiers. They are regular blue collar workers being forced to land on a hostile planet at the behest of some unholy Jap-British conglomerate. The horror of Alien completely precipitated cyberpunk's anticapitalist themes, and everything Alien says about the worthlessness of human life in regards to the economy holds true today, look no further than the wage workers being forced to work in a pandemic just to keep the Dow Jones above 20,000 points ("crew expendable"). The xenomorph perfectly encapsulates the horrific, unceremonious end that lies at the end of the "work, buy, consume, die" cycle.

You see, this argument would have had some sort of weight if said marines weren't your stereotypical, one-dimensional, and incomptetent slasher teenagers who are clearly there just to get slaughtered. Those marines don't kill the Xenomorphs because they are well armed, well trained, or because they are relying on a great strategy; they in fact almost got themselves immediately wiped out, also not because the Xenomorphs were particularly smart either, but because the marines were fucking pussies who couldn't even fire their rounds because muh reactor or some retarded shit I don't even remember. Ultimately, the Xenos only start getting wiped out because they start ti mindlessly charge to a fucking turret for no reason, essentially just turning the Xenos into dumb fucking space ants. Not to mention, Cameron modified Giger's design and turned into that shit for god knows why.

I love both the movies, but for fifteenth reasons. The scene in Alien where they’re walking through the derelict space craft was really eerie. The space truckers getting killed by the creature one by one made for a really tense movie. Aliens, was more of a scifi action movie, with some horror elements. I don’t understand the meme that you can’t enjoy both.

I assume there's a difference between occupied planets and outposts. A bunch of Arcturians on LV 426 are still Arcturians. Once the planet is terraformed and named would they label people are being from that planet. The first people on Mars will be Terrans (Or whatever) the next generation would be Martians, I guess.
