>never made it to American TV
>DVDs were out of print forever
>against all odds, became one of the most streamed shows on Netflix 25 years after its release
What went so right? Why did the US public finally wake up to the brilliance of this show (outside of the niche weeb crowd, I mean)?
Never made it to American TV
wasn't it always popular...? also it's not brilliant
The Namek arc was the best part.
popular in Japan, not so much in the U.S
Cool Aesthetic
People will eat up any shit you put on Netflix so it's not really a surprise that it became a hit there, all the people who had heard about it but never had seen it probably watched the whole thing in netflix while scrolling their phones.
Get the fuck out of here, weebshit
It was definitely popular here when I first started browsing and that was fucking years ago...
>never made it to American tv
Bruh I watched that shit on Adult Swim at least 15 years ago
>never made it to American TV
It was on Toonami
For two heavily edited episodes and then they stopped
>never made it to American tv
fake
>never made it to American TV
Didn't it air on fucking Cartoon Network?
Live action when
This. They ran two PG-cut episodes for Giant Robot Week and then later showed the whole thing on Adult Swim.
Only 2 edited episodes as already mentioned in the thread.
Never.
Uncastable.
What about Adult Swim? That's still Cartoon Network
The real question: are they white?
Getting into Evangelion in 1998 was so surreal.
SEELE wants to unite all souls to one and make themselves as Gods.
Gendo wants to reunite with his wife, Yui, using Rei's help.
Rei has rejected Gendo because she sees through him, and instead seeks to find herself.
Shinji is borderline suicidal, and doesn't want to do anything.
SEELE and NERV are in open conflict because Gendo won't obey, and SEELE has the upper hand.
These are the major players as it would turn out in the EVA story.
SEELE invades, and seizes the opportunity to start Third Impact right then and there. They plan to use EVA01 (Copy of a God), the MP-Series (also copies of a God), and Shinji, who's suicidal mindset is what they'll use as a catalyst to end all lives on the planet and take their souls.
SEELE commences the ritual, and the end of the world has begun, effectively.
Gendo is looking to hitch a ride on this to get to Yui using Rei's help. Rei however, senses Shinji's pain, and only takes Adam into herself, and leaves Gendo for dead.
Rei enters her original body, Lilith, and seeks to help Shinji. Rei does this by assimilating the MP-series, so that Rei effectively becomes one half of the Third Impact engine, while Shinji is the other.
Too little too late, and the entirety of mankind is reduced to nothing but their souls, and are absorbed into the third impact medium, which has become Rei.
From hereon out, Rei and Shinji talk, and Rei is eventually able to convince Shinji that what he does is merely escapism (a theme in the show), and as such Shinji is able to conclude that this new world is void and empty without the interactions of others, even if painful.
The ritual is undone, and all souls are released, and will eventually find themselves in human form again
You also forgot both Kaworu and Yui were also present during the whole process.
Yui drifts to outer space in the Eva-01 forever, and Rei/Lilith's soul remains on Earth, watching over Shinji. Not sure what happened to Kaworu's soul.
>last scenes in the show a bunch of floating spirits that never go back
>last scenes in the film clearly the earth is a wasteland with blood oceans and no humans around except who shinji wanted
>Ahhh surely instrumentality was reversed
>except who shinji wanted
Not quite like that.
If Instrumentality had been completed, a new life form would have emerged.
Asuka being besides Shinji in One More Final is entirely because of her free will, not Shinji's desire.
Nobody knows how much time passed since the end of Third Impact until the "One More Final" part. Rust on Misato's cross hints that it may have been months at least.
One of the early drafts for One More Final (found in official sources) was that Shinji was lying on the beach, holding a hand.... of a dismembered arm.
>wimpy loser gets bossed around by two super stronk mary sue girl characters
>tries to pull edgy social commentary but just comes off as pretentious garble
I will never get the appeal.
It would be better without an incompetent cuck MC and if it just stuck with giant robot action. XRA did philosophy and metaphor better than the psychobabble of mid-late Evangelion.
It was very popular worldwide, and the DVDs were nearly always availble online, not out of print.
OP is a faggot.
>be Shinji
>have a giant Oedipus complex
>Your dad, who is busy saving the world, gives you a giant robot made from your mom
>also gives you the 14 year old version of your mom you can bone without it being weird
>also wants you to live with a hot woman who's around the age of your mom you can bone
>then gives you a feisty redhead you can bone too if you wanted to
>Your dad doesn't force you to do anything but shows him the consequences of your actions, basically treats you like an adult
>NOOOOO MY LIFE IS TERRIBLE NOONE CARES ABOUT ME EXCEPT FOR THE PEOPLE WHO DO
What did Shinji mean by this?
>Mary Sue characters
>in Eva
the fuck
Unless you count Unit 01 I guess.
IDK if you disagreed with me or not. You only listed some random details.
I've heard it's style but no substance.
think about the person who said that to you and how much semen they drink a day, do you really trust their assessment?
XRA? The stupid adult swim show?
I bet Yas Forums told you that
Slightly less than you?
Yes. It's great.
are the Netflix subs okay for a first time watcher? do I really need to read both The New Testament to get this?
It's more substance than your favorite show
When I watched this on adult swim like 15 years ago in high school it seemed like one of the most amazing things I had ever seen.
When I watch it now it doesn't seem that good.
And I can't help but wonder why?
>be Shinji
>have a giant Oedipus complex
He doesn't even remember his mom.
>but wonder why?
it's style over substance.
In the english speaking world, its more of a "love it-hate it" scenario. Theres probably more negative criticism to it nowadays then there is positive criticism.
The golden child over here for anime is no doubt Cowboy Bebop.
Yes. The Netflix translation is completely fine. People only were saying otherwise because le outrage culture, new thing bad etc
It has more substance than your favorite show
>bunch of normalfags are going to shit over the zombie corpse of Eva
oh well
When I watched this in high school when I was 15 it seemed like the most amazing show I had ever seen.
When I watched sit again later it didn't seem so great and I don't understand why.
It's the opposite for me
Whoever told you that is correct. Anyone who doesn't suffer from high functional autism will be dumbfounded something like this even exists. Never tell your friends you watch Evangelion or they WILL stop taking to you for fear of you being a closeted pedophile
Yas Forums conditioned you to not like things
Dr. Mugg has plenty of substance.
Friendly reminder that Reichads are the true masterrace, and that Asukafags are filthy vermin that need to be put down.
>mary sue
Those characters get fucked up all the time wtf are you on about?
So how did everyone suddenly die and end up in some soul machine? I only watched the first tv series. Where is Shinji at the end when everyone is clapping? Still in the machine?
Fuck Eva, pic related is the superior giant robot anime.
thanks friend
>BIG OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
>SHOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWW TIMMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
just download the 2D4U torrent and the commie subbed EoE, you’ll still get the dialogue either way and get a higher quality source. if anything, the Netflix subs are more pedantic and dumb. You won’t really understand now, but for example, the protag is originally referred to as the “3rd Children” in the Japanese dialogue. It’s clumsy engrish, and it’s better to say the “3rd Child” but the former is more “accurate”
Haha yep
Beyond that overall motifs in manga/anime art style are considered international by the Japanese and not necessarily representative of their race by default, Japan is clearly being described as a cultural melting pot after the flood. It being Japan, it's probably full of westerners who had to adapt to their culture by taking up Japanese names and such.
wrong
It's great, but there should have been more.
season one was fucking great
season two was fucking trash
I watched it when it was on TV, but didn't really pay attention to it. I'm rewatching it currently on Netflix.
They're anime, they're a reflection of the soul. So if you're not write it Asian you'd best stop fucking watching and therefore making black Rei a reality.
