British people occupy a very smart part of the global stage. The accent is obscure and hardly heard unless you're really into Dr. Who. It's like asking why Americans can't do a good Panamanian accent. We aren't exposed to such an obscure part of the world that often.

Because Britain has a hundred different accents across the regions where as america only has a fee (Patrick Bateman straight accent, redneck accent, New York accent). We hear a bit of each different british accent everytime we watch their crap so whenever an american tries doing a british accent he mixes the different regional accents up and Brits immediately think it's bad.

America speaks clear, straight, english that is easy to mimic.
