Subtext? You mean subtitles?
Only one of the directors in this photo is actually talented, and it's _Noé_.
When the FUCK is Lux Æterna going to become available?
Who knows, my friend. Who knows.
Any "occult" films like Angel Heart (1987)? Preferably with either a Judeo-Christian or Hindu setting
People shat all over Constantine for KR being neither blonde nor British, but he got the spirit of that character completely. The ritual magic scenes are quite good.
This isn't /flick/.
there won't ever be a discussion about real cinema until we get a /film/ board.
That movie is pure shit.
>still feels stuck in 60s french intellectualism
are you scared of the mention of philosophy? godard lists his citations at the end of his films and they are hardly dominated by french intellectuals of the 60s. his films deal with grand ideas: god (je vous salue Marie, helas pour moi), love (eloge de l'amour), orientalism (le livre d'image), post-communism (germany year 90 nine zero). how is he stuck in 60s french intellectualism?
I hate Jean Luc GoFuckYourself, his films are trash, even the good ones like contempt and Pierrot le fou don’t age well after watching it a second or third time.
>french intellectuals
I saw Goodbye To Language a year after it came out, 3D glasses and all. Completely brilliant. Deceptively simple.
Now engaging with French intellectuals writing currently. Not stuck in the past at all.
Daily reminder that Resnais, Rohmer, Rivette >>> Godard
Resnais's greatest accomplishment was hiring Duras.
Not really although it's true that Resnais was really dependent on his scripts and collaborators. Also Duras is not a great director.
>Also Duras is not a great director
lmao plebfiltered
DUDE LONG TAKES AND TIME AND SPACE OF CINEMATIC LANDSCAPE BUT WITH A SLIGHTLY FEMINIST AND POST COLONIAL ANGLE. Akerman 2.0
stick to bergman and a24
Over Duras? Yes, please. Your stick to and muh plebfiltered just prove you have no arguments at all. I like Benning so you are wrong.
this thread has turned into pretension: beret and gitanes edition
no wonder people despise you
what does /film/ think of this?
also what are some /pædo/ core?
>I like Benning
epic entry level name drop. having fun discovering cinema?
Yes because Duras is the pinnacle of obscure cinema.
I brought up duras because she was relevant to the discussion. not as an epic name drop, dimwit.
Then you proceeded to do epic counter arguments based on your dumb presumptions.
that pathetic namedrop proved all my presumptions correct. watch arthouse for more than a few months and you'll come around to duras.
Yes i'm sure that people who watch arthouse for few months have seen Duras, Benning, Akerman. What's some obscure director according to you
one who isn't oscar-nominated, distributed by criterion, one of the most famous modern french authors, etc.
Benning is Oscar nominated and distributed by Criterion? Didn't know that.
>etc.
benning is as famous as an installation artist gets
What about grandrieux
Cringe, and I actually like Duras

It's okay. The Yakuza Papers films were better
Am I the only one who really loves Spartacus? I feel like it's a least better than The Killing and Lolita
jus watched satantango in its entirety for the first time ama
imo werckmeister harmonies was better
>mfw I find out Satantango is supposed to be pronounced Shatantango
Why would you watch it now when the bluray is out in less than a month. I agree that WH is better.
Hungarians be like:
>A regény két részből áll, mindegyik rész hat-hat kisebb egységből.
>A mű másrészt hálózatszerűen szerveződik.
A szereplőket a megérzéseik is összekötik: pl. Elmarad a befejezés, újra kezdődik minden. A mű ezzel az olvasót arra készteti, hogy olvassa újra.
Yes.
I'm still waiting the Ozu one
Yes it does, but Spartacus is a Hollywood product more than anything, The stone mine scenes were made by Anthony Mann, and many of the acting scenes by Kirk Douglas himself when he got tired of Kubrick as well. It's not a 100% Kubrick work beside the army shoots and the bathroom scene which was cut out because it was gay.
Didn't Mann left because he argued with Douglas? He only shot the salt mine.
Yes, he argued with him and Kirk kicked him out and hired Kubrick, then he argued with him too and got kicked as well and finished the movie by himself.
I found Taipei Story to be ok and nothing more than that. This was my first film by Yang and I'm liking some things like the score, the cinematography and the sets, but God were the characters in this film just outright retarded and nausea inducing. Which one do you recommend by him I check out next?
Yi Yi
A Brighter Summer Day has probably the greatest story ever told in film, but like the other user mentioned Yi Yi has some pretty poignant symbolism and a heartfelt monologue at the end but is more slice of life. Yi Yi is 3 hours and A Brighter Summer Day is 4 hours if that helps.
i dont buy movies
Torrents exist
Best tarr to start with?
post your letterboxd profiles
Werckmeister Harmonies or Damnation
>Spartacus is a Hollywood product more than anything
which is why it's better than any of his films.
Thanks user
So I'm reading The Odyssey and I can't help but wonder how come so few directors have opted for adapting classical plays and epics? The only thing I know of are Pasolini's three films and that's pretty much it. Any other notable examples?
Oh Brother, where are you? and Inside Llewyn Davis.
Nostos, Angelopoulos uses Odyssey as a template in his films like Eternity and a Day and Ulysses Gaze. I'm sure there are others.
