Just finished fellowship. How did they manage to produce stuff like this lmoast 20 years ago but struggle to produce anything close these days?
Also what's with all the brainlets sayings it's just a simple good vs evil story? The theme for this movie isn't about that stuff. It's about taking responsibility and doing the task at hand even if you don't want to or it's extremely painful to do.

They had an insane amount of prep leading up to that movie. Genuine passion and dedication. A lot of work went into all of those movies.
Because they actually took their time with it and it has years of actual preproduction work. Yeah, the first one came out in 2001, but they had been working on it since as early as 1998.
Most things these days don’t have a production like that. They just quickly work shit out whatever it takes them to do in 11 months.

I saw these movies as a kid. But when you rewatch them as an adult they're like entirely different films.
For example I was confused why boromir was petty and turned evil. But the real reason is because he was very determined to a point of desperation to save Gondor. And that in turn let evil seduce him and lose his mind.
Frodo's commitment to his burden helped me find direction in my own life
Now I get why people are pissed at GRRM's comments on Tolkein.
Lotr may seem simple on the surface but upon closer inspection it's more meaningful than one would think.
In contrast GRRM tries to go all realistic and you think it's deep. But when you try digging further you realize you already bit the bottom and there's nothing left to see.

Lotr has fully fleshed out languages, culture, history and mythos. GRRM thinks "depth" comes from offhand references to taxation

Everything about the Shire scenes is perfect. It's almost an hour before anything actually happens but I don't even care because every single thing is just so god damn overflowing with charm and atmosphere. It also introduces the primary Leitmotif of the film.
This, the trilogy peaks in Moria, after that gets progressively worse and worse.

Lothlorien and Amon Hen are kino, wtf do you mean. Fellowship is also the best book so its understandable.
Amon hen is the first over the top action scene with legolas and aragorn acting like superheros, compare that to Moria were they are struggling to kill the troll and running for their lives... And every action scene after that is worse and worse culminating with legolas surfing the elephant which at the time in my theatre, provoked laughs.

They changed the story because they thought it would add more dramatic tension. Film and book aren't the same medium, you can't always do a 1 for 1 book to script conversion. That being said, the changes to Faramir's character and the Frodo and Sam abandonment is the weakest part of the trilogy and I'm not here to make excuses for it. Overall the trilogy is very good, in particular Fellowship of the Ring and I'm content with both its strength and weaknesses.

How do I know? Because I've seen the behind the scenes interviews where Jackson explains why he deviated from the book. I'm by no means a cultist. I realize that the adaptations aren't perfect and I've compartmentalized that. Even with flaws there are still so many aspects they nailed so well (cinematography, casting, score, props, etc.) that I'm not going to tell you I can't appreciate Jackson's trilogy believe it or not.

No, the "Frodo banishing Sam" change is a fundamental change to a very important scene. In the book, the scene shows that Gollum can be compassionate and Sam can be ill-willed. The movie version reduces them to 2D good and evil.
