They rely more on their well built characters than whacky situations and cutaways. That’s just compared to family guy though, I never watched the Cleveland Show.

A good chunk of Family Guy's old writers and even Futurama writers were writing it

The characters are more balanced imo

the first two seasons of this show absolutely slay me, but everything after that is just regular seth mcacfarlane garbage. Also I hate how the focus shifted from stan to roger's le whacky dress up

I’ve said it before in American Dad threads and I’ll say it again; Roger is what makes the show work.
Roger being able to change and be whatever character is necessary for the episode allows all the established characters to react in appropriate and organic ways.
Of course there’s plenty of exceptions, and the newer season episodes kind of stray, but the characters have been able to be more consistent for longer, largely thanks to Roger.

The entire family unit is strong enough to do sub-plots on their own, with maybe exception to Klaus who probably needs another person but is still a funny character.

That shtick has turned to unfunny shit when they became all self-aware about it.

All I had to do was show my gf the picture and she knows the entire episode, what episode it is and what the entire plot was about.
